Can not get VMSpc to work

Bought VMSpc about 4 weeks ago and have not been able to get it to work. Basically when I go into connections on COM3 it says it tries to start but fails to connect "failure jib to pc".
I have a 1998 Fleetwood Discovery. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium edition and version 2.3 of VMSpc. I have a Seriel to USB connnection. The led lights on the VMSpc are working and all connections have been checked and double checked.

I suspect it is the serial usb cable. When jib is off, see green light on and red light slow flashing(every 5 sec). When engine on, green light is on, and red light flashes rapidly.

So any ideas as to what is not working here? Or suggestions for the right usb/serial cable. I have a HP laptop.

Thanks,
Ken Hudson

Re:Can not get VMSpc to work

Com 3 is typically the Modem, which means that the VMSpc Program can Open that Com Port but won't be able to connect to the JIB.

Can you determine the Com Port assigned to the USB to Serial adapter?? You might need to look in the Device Manager in the Control Panel.

Also, with Vista you will need to follow the Startup Procedure detailed in the "VMSpc Step-by-Step Instructions" insert that came with your VMSpc and that is also located on the VMSpc Downloads page.

The LED Lights on the VMSpc JIB indicate Power with the Green LED and the Rapid Flashing Red LED indicates Engine Data. A slow RED LED, 5 Seconds ON, 5 Seconds OFF indicates NO Engine Data. All of these are Normal Operations...

There is a small possibility of a bad Serial Cable, but I would start with determining the Com Port of the USB to Serial adapter, and setting VMSpc to that Com Port, then following the Startup Procedure.

I also have seen issues with Com Ports set above Com 10, and don't know why this should be an issue, but all the USB to Serial Adapters I have seen let you change the Com Port. One further note, when you move your USB to Serial adapter from USB port to USB port the assigned Com Port will change. My advice is to pick ONE USB port on your computer and use it every time..

If you continue to have issues, please call us, I have YEARS of experience in trouble shooting VMSpc...

Re:can not get VMSpc to work

Updating from Windows 8 to 8.1 is like a First Time Install.

You will need to Disable the Unsigned Device Driver Detection, and Install the VMSpc Device Drivers with the Device Driver Install Helper Program.

YouTube Videos for some Step-by-Step directions:

Disable the Unsigned Device Driver Detection, for Windows 8.

Disable the Unsigned Device Driver Detection, for Windows 8.1.

It is working now

Thanks for the info, very helpful. I finally did get it working. Bought a usb/serial adapter from Radio Shack. Had to update the drivers for Vista via internet. The working com port was 8. Now all is working correctly. Thanks again for your help.

Compatability

Will the VMSpc work on the GM Workhorse chasis with 8.1L gas engine?
DC

Re:Compatability

No.

Only LARGE Diesel Truck Engines. The GM Vortec 8.1 is LARGE, but Gasoline.

Com Port Failure

Hi. I have tried all the tips in the forum to get my VMSpc program to work.

I have tried 2 different usb adapters and even bought a new serial cable. I have even hooked into the diagnostic port near the engine with the same negative results. ( Com Port Failure. ) One usb adapter boots on com 11, and the other one boots on com 12.
I set the VMSpc program accordingly.

I have tried the boot secquences listed in the forum.

My JIB has 4 wires......2 white, 1 red, and 1 black. Is this correct.

Status lights on the JIB are solid green and rapid red. It seems to be fine.

The dealer has used the data port on the vehicle so I assume it is fine.

Also tried removing and re installing VMSpc.

I hope I do not have a unique situation. HELP

Com Port Failure

I did manage to get VMSpc up and running. I had to disable my modem and set VMSpc up on com 3. Like one of the posts says, it may not work on a com port 10 or higher.

I have a 2006 Cummins ISB 300 hp engine and Allison 3000 Transmission.

All of the gauge functions work except....Fuel injection pressure, Engine oil temp, Trans oil temp, and Gear select.
Should these functions be available??

THANKS

Re:Com Port Failure

I am glad you have it working. Most laptops today have COM1 and COM2 available, so you should not have to disable your Modem to free-up COM3.

As for the gauges:
Fuel injection pressure
Engine oil temp
Trans oil temp
Gear select

Only the Cat 3126 and 3176 seem to support "Fuel injection pressure", and they don't support "Oil Pressure".

"Engine oil temp" I have only seen on Cat C-13 and Larger and M-11 (ISM) and Larger Engines. The ISB is too small of an engine.

See my post, Allison Transmissions, for information about which features are supported on Allison Transmissions.
